Bolton is a town located near Manchester, in North West England. Bolton is situated close to the West Pennine Moors, just 10 miles nort west of the Manchester city centre. It is the largest and most populous settlement of the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, the former County Borough of Bolton, has a population of nearly 140,000 (this figure does not include the many now abolished local authorities which surrounded Bolton, for example Farnworth Municipal Borough). The metropolitan borough population does however take these figures into account, and the population is 262,400.
Bolton is historically a part of Lancashire, and originated on the Bolton le Moors moorland, as a small settlement. During the English Civil War the town was a Parliamentarian outpost in a very Royalist region. In 1644 Bolton was stormed by 3,000 Royalist troops led by Prince Rupert of the Rhine. This attack, which became known as the Bolton Massacre, resulted in 1600 residents killed and 700 being taken prisoner.
